LOW THRESHOLD OF BLISS

“We are here for just a little while to learn to bear the beams of love.”   William Blake

We say we have a low threshold of pain, and that is why we drink too much or eat too much and do other like behaviors. We need to cover our pain.

One of my teachers, Stan Grof, suggested that what we really have is a low threshold of bliss! We can stand a lot of pain; we even heap it on ourselves sometimes.

Let us experience a good solid dose of bliss or happiness and we will inevitably find some way to sabotage it.  We might start telling ourselves, “Better not get too happy, the next shoe is going to drop pretty soon.” “Let’s be realistic about this.”

Try it some time, notice your happiness, and notice how quickly your ego will attempt to shoot it down.

I have told you this so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. John 15:11

With ego consciousness even joy will not be enough. It takes trust, faith and practice to allow ourselves to participate in the complete joy of God.
