WHO YOU ARE

One of my teachers reminded me, “Be careful what you link up to those words ‘I am.’ They are the words of creation, whatever you put after ‘I am’ will live with you even if you don’t want them to, be very careful what you create with the words ‘I am.’

Remember when we were kids, and someone, probably a parent asked us, “Who do you think you are?” Even though the question was asked in a tone of annoyance or anger, wouldn’t it have been wonderful if we answered that by saying, “I’m really glad you asked that question because I am a perfect, unconditionally loved child of God? I am a reflection of God’s light and love. God’s light and love flow through me.

I am a continual a reflection of that love and the light of God constantly shines through me. Thank you so much for asking because you’ve helped me remember.” But we didn’t do that. We knew we would be clobbered, and also by that time in our lives, most of that truth was already taught out of us. Even if we had the nerve to say it, we knew we would not be heard the way we would have liked; we would have been misunderstood, and so we covered up that truth.

And what is that truth—that you are a beloved child of God.

It is work; it is spiritual practice to stay aware, and to remember who you really are.
